In past times, the best pargeters worked in high relief, creating designs which fly free of their background but so far as I know, no English pargeter does this any more. I do enjoy a challenge and I decided to teach myself how to model in high relief so in 2013 I created this overmantel in my own home. I should have considered lighting much earlier in the process and I should have modelled some of the motifs on the bench first, but it was such fun to do and a great learning experience.
The parget features realistic human figures which quite wonderfully emerged from the plaster with a life of their own. Adam is sweet and innocent but Eve has already eaten the apple, so wears a necklace and has calculating eyes.
